Japanning & Lacquer Finishes

Japanning and lacquer finishes are highly decorative specialist coatings known for their rich depth, smooth appearance, and refined high-gloss finish. Traditionally inspired by East Asian decorative arts, these finishes have been used for centuries within fine furniture, architectural detailing, and luxury interiors to create elegant, durable, and visually striking surfaces.

At SJM French Polishing & Specialist Decoration Ltd, we specialise in bespoke japanning and lacquer finishes across high-end residential, hospitality, heritage, and commercial projects. Our skilled craftsmen apply carefully layered coatings using specialist techniques to achieve finishes ranging from deep mirror-like gloss surfaces to softer satin and textured effects.

These finishes can be tailored in a wide range of colours and styles, from traditional decorative japanning with intricate detailing to contemporary minimalist lacquer finishes that create sleek architectural surfaces. Whether used to restore period features or enhance modern interiors, japanning and lacquer bring sophistication, richness, and a sense of luxury to a space.
